New Delhi:
A 26-year-old man on Thursday cooked up a story of being robbed by four bike-borne men who also set fire to his car to make a fake insurance claim, police said.
Manoj alleged that four assailants came on bike, waylaid him and tried to rob him in Narela on the outskirts of Delhi. They set the car on fire when he resisted, police said.
Police, however, said the story was false and that Manoj, who makes a living as a driver, cooked up the story to claim accident insurance for his newly bought Maruti Eco car.
Deputy Commissioner of Police BS Jaiswal said, "Our investigations have revealed that neither Manoj was robbed nor his car was set on fire."
The fact is that the car caught fire due to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) kit and his claim would become invalid if the insurance company came to know about it as this was a breach of the terms of the insurance policy. He also hid from the insurance company that he would used the car for commercial purpose, said Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat.
