New Delhi: A 40-year-old passenger has died after he slipped and fell onto the tracks while trying to board a train at the Nizamuddin Railway Station in New Delhi.
The accident took place last night around 9.30. Press Trust of India (PTI) reports that he was trying to make his way onto a moving train - the Rajdhani Express to Indore - when he fell down.
The passenger was trapped by a part of the train for a while - more than an hour, according to some reports. Police officials say he was finally removed, badly mangled and bleeding profusely- after the footboard of the coach that he was stuck under was sliced away with the help of gas cutters.
He was then rushed to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) eight-10 km away where he was declared dead on arrival.
Passengers say there was no ambulance at the station.
"Railway stations lag behind in providing minimum medical facilities which should be available at every station," said Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi.
