New Delhi:
A man who was on the run since 2009, after allegedly cheating a number of youths of lakhs of rupees on pretext of getting them Railway jobs, has been arrested, police said on Friday.
Deepak Chauhan, a resident of Bijnore in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested from Mangolpuri area near Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in New Delhi.
Police said Chauhan is the kingpin of a gang of cheaters who used to dupe unemployed youth by giving them false assurances about providing jobs in Indian Railways. He was also running a security agency with office in a prestigious complex in Indirapuram in Ghaziabad and was presently residing in duplex flat in Vaishali.
Police action came on a complaint filed by Vinit Kumar and three of his friends after they came to know that the appointment letters for job of Ticket Collector in Railways given to them by the gang were fake.
Chauhan and others had received a sum of Rs 12 lakh from Vinit and three of his friends and gave them fake appointment letters, B S Jaiswal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Outer District, said.
During investigation, police came to know that Chauhan frequently keeps on changing his rented accommodation and mobile phone numbers.
"It was established that he resided in posh colonies of NCR region in a lavish lifestyle," Mr Jaiswal said, adding that he was arrested on Thursday.
During interrogation, he told police that he was pursuing chartered accountancy when he came into contact with certain persons connected to "liaison work".
"Infatuated by the lavish lifestyle of others, he dropped his studies and started liaison work to dupe needy people. For this he with his associates organised a gang and started duping people," Mr Jaiswal said.
To avoid identification, the accused kept on changing his accommodation frequently and discontinued any sort of link with his family and other associates.
