Man held for duping club membership seekers

New Delhi: A 38-year-old man has been arrested for cheating people on the pretext of providing memberships to various clubs here, police said Wednesday.

Vineet Mehra was arrested from Defence Colony area in south Delhi Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police Chhaya Sharma said.

During interrogation, Mehra told the police that he has duped thousands of people, and often posed as president of various clubs in Delhi.

"A Santro car, fake receipts of payments, bank passbooks and mobile SIM cards have been recovered from him," the police officer added.

Mehra was earlier arrested in 2009 for a similar case and jailed for a few months.

"He also told the police that he got the idea of cheating people three years ago by visiting a club in Civil Lines, where he saw people shelling out lakhs of rupees for membership to the club," Sharma said.

Mehra worked as a typist with various printing presses.
