A man, who killed his three-year-old niece here after thrashing her and throwing her on the ground following an argument with her mother, has been arrested, police said Saturday.
"Ravi alias Chandra Prakash, 20, was held Saturday morning from Tigri Extension at Neb Sarai area in South Delhi," said a senior police officer.
The girl, Babita succumbed to her injuries at the AIIMS Trauma Centre early Friday.
Poonam, 31 and her daughters Babita and sister Radha, 2, were living at her brother's residence at JJ Camp in Tigri Extension in Neb Sarai area in south Delhi.
Poonam had separated from her husband Lekhraj a couple of months ago.
According to a senior police officer, an argument broke out between Ravi and his sister Thursday evening on a trivial issue when Ravi assaulted Poonam and her two daughters with a baton.
In the melee, Ravi picked up Babita and threw her on the ground, the official said.
"She suffered critical injuries and lost consciousness. Ravi then ran away," he added.
All the three were rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre where Babita succumbed to her injuries.
The officer said that Ravi used to ask Poonam to return to her husband's house in Mahipalpur, but she refused, saying that her husband was a habitual drinker who beat her up often.
