Man seeks police protection for live-in with sister-in-law

New Delhi: A man has sought the Delhi High Court's help in getting police protection to facilitate his live-in relationship with his wife's sister after apprehending threats from her family members.

The court, however, asked the man to explain which law of the land allows such a relationship.

Justice Hima Kohli, instead of dismissing the plea right away, has kept it pending for adjudication and has asked the city police to ascertain if the man faces any threat due to his live-in relationship with his wife's sister.

Meanwhile, the judge also asked the petitioner Raj Kamal's counsel to provide her with various case laws and legal provisions, if any, relating to such relationship.

"Is it permissible in Indian society?" Justice Kohli said while asking the counsel as to which provisions of the Hindu Marriage Act permits such a relationship.

While asking the police to file its report on the alleged threat to petitioner's life, Justice Kohli adjourned the hearing to July 26.

The court's order came on the petition by city resident Raj Kamal who has sought police protection saying that he wanted to live with his wife's sister and claimed that his wife has given consent to this but apprehended threat from her other family members.

The petitioner also claimed that he made a friendship agreement with his sister-in-law to stay together throughout life.
