New Delhi: As residents voted across 272 wards for the 2017 municipal elections in the national capital, Delhi also witnessed a series of colourful and humorous symbols used by independent candidates, ranging from bat, pressure cooker, diamonds to school bags and auto-rickshaws.
Some of the symbols used by independent candidates for the North Delhi Municipal Corporation election include green chilli, buckets, bottle among others. Other symbols in the North Corporation polls include gas cylinder, candle, table, tractor-riding farmer, pressure cooker, cot, bat as well as a sewing machine.
Similarly, the posh wards of South Delhi also saw many independent candidates with quirky symbols such as spectacles, almirah, a diamond, coat, flute, chessboard, binoculours and gramophone.
Independent candidates across the 64 wards in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation used symbols such as school bag, batsman, matchbox, blackboard, glass tumbler, air-conditioner, envelope and auto-rickshaws.
During the campaign for the municipal polls, the key parties - BJP, Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress - resorted to an all-out slogan and poster war to get their message across the electorate.|
While the AAP took repeated pot-shots at the BJP, which seeks to retain the corporations for a third consecutive term, the Congress is banking on its 15-year long rule between 1998 and 2013 in the city. The BJP, too, mocked the AAP and the Congress, buoyed by the results of the recently held Rajouri Garden bypoll, which it won.
The results for the 267 wards of the North, South and East municipal corporations will be declared on April 26.
