McDonalds employee awarded life term for killing colleague

New Delhi: A 24-year-old employee of McDonalds has been awarded life term by a Delhi court for killing one of his colleagues for allegedly becoming friendly with his girlfriend.

Rohit Dhingra was sentenced along with his friend Ashish. Together, the duo lynched Mahesh Nagar at the Yamuna river embankment in Sonia Vihar in North East Delhi where he was invited for a drink.

"I hereby sentence the convicts to a term of rigorous imprisonment for life," said Additional Sessions Judge B S Chumbak. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on each, but acquitted their third accomplice Amit Kumar due to lack of evidence.

Rohit and Mahesh had become friends while working at separate outlets of McDonalds in Connaught Place. In court, the prosecution today said that Rohit could not tolerate his girlfriend's growing friendship with Mahesh and decided to teach him a lesson.

The accused - Rohit, Ashish and Amit- met Mahesh on January 10, 2008 at McDonalds and cajoled him into joining them for a drink.

After purchasing a few beer cans, Rohit took Mahesh in an autorickshaw to Sonia Vihar embankment. A few drinks later, Mahesh tried to flee but Ashish and Amit caught hold of him.  He was then hit repeatedly by Rohit with a five-kg stone, resulting in his death.

A case was registered at Khajuri Khas police station and the three were arrested.

Rohit, in his statement, disclosed that after murdering Mahesh, they went to Connaught Place and ordered burgers and cold drinks at McDonalds.

Additional Public Prosecutor S K Dass said the circumstances in which Mahesh was killed with a five kg stone showed the murder was committed in an extremely brutal and dastardly manner.
