New Delhi: A Class 12 student out celebrating with his friends was allegedly driving the Mercedes that killed a pedestrian on Monday night. The boy was arrested under laws for underage offenders and released on bail.

The police say action will be taken against his father, who owns the car and allegedly allowed his minor son to drive.

The teen was on a night out with six friends; they all had just finished their Class 12 exams.

Around 8.30 pm on Monday, when 32-year-old Sidharth Sharma was returning home after buying takeout from a noodle stand when the Mercedes zoomed down a road at 100 km per hour and hit him at the Civil Lines area. The impact was such that Mr Sharma was flung nearly 15 feet into the air, according to an eyewitness.

After Mr Sharma, a marketing consultant, crashed onto the road, he was moved to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

The Mercedes went over a footpath and its front tyres burst before it stopped.

The driver and his friends abandoned the car and ran away.

A witness had told the police that the boys in the car appeared to be teenagers.

A case of negligent driving amounting to murder was registered.

Yesterday, the police said the Mercedes owner's driver had owned responsibility for the accident, but then retracted his confession, claiming that he had been pressured.

Before running into Mr Sharma, the Mercedes narrowly missed an accident with two motorcycles, said eye-witnesses who saw two bikes chase the car before the crash. The bikers have not been identified.
