The tremors came shortly after an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter Scale struck about 200 kilometres off Japan's coast in the Pacific Ocean.
In Tokyo, buildings shook for around a minute and set off car alarms. The earthquake was reportedly at a depth of 696 kilometres.
No tsunami warning was immediately issued.
Mild tremors were felt in New Delhi and the National Capital Region for nearly a minute this evening, triggering panic as people living in high-rises rushed out of the buildings.
Micro-blogging site Twitter was abuzz with people writing about the tremors.
