New Delhi: Bharat Singh, an Independent MLA, was shot at by four gunmen in the Najafgarh area of Delhi today. Hospital sources said, after two surgeries, the legislator is now out of danger and his condition is stable.
According to reports, the MLA was shot at in his office around 8 this morning. The MLA received four bullet injuries and was immediately rushed to the Chanan Devi Hospital in Janakpuri. His uncle was also injured in the attack
"This happened when the MLA was coming to his office. Just as he stepped out of his car, some unknown people fired bullets at him. He ran inside his office. Those people (gunmen) also went inside. They were on bikes," said an eyewitness.
A joint team of Delhi Police, Crime Branch and Special Cell that is investigating the incident. and has identified two suspects. "We hope to get a breakthrough by the evening," Delhi Police Commissioner VK Gupta said.
Terming the incident "unfortunate", Delhi Chief Minister said, "Such incident must not happen. I feel very scared. Police must take care and look into these attacks. Guards and PSOs have been provided to the MLAs."
Leader of opposition in Delhi Assembly, VK Malhotra, has slammed the state Home Minister for the deteriorating law and order situation in the city. "If the alarming situation in Delhi cannot be improved, the Home Minister should quit," he said.
In the Delhi Assembly yesterday, some MLAs had complained of harassment and extortion calls and had demanded extra security. Slamming the law and order situation in the capital, the MLAs said, "If even we can't be safe, what do we promise to the people of the city?"
