My daughter is strong, she will live, says Delhi gang-rape survivor's father
New Delhi: The father of 23-year-old Delhi medical student 'Amanat' (NOT her real name), who is fighting for life after her brutal gang-rape in a moving bus, says she is "strong and will survive".

"No words can describe how brave my daughter is. Please pray for her health," the father told a private news channel.

"My daughter is strong, she will survive. She is conscious now," he said.

Amanat's father appealed to the thousands of young protesters campaigning to get her justice not to indulge in violence. "I appeal to everyone to refrain from vandalism and to help the police," he said.

Amanat was tortured and gang-raped on the night of December 16 by six men in a moving bus in Delhi. A male friend, who accompanied her, too was beaten up. After the assault, the two were thrown off the bus, bleeding and semi-naked.

A war of sorts is on at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital to save Amanat even as her health fluctuates. She has undergone a series of surgeries and almost the whole of her intestines have been removed. On Sunday, after two days of positive signs, she was put on the ventilator again after developing breathing trouble.

Doctors say they are concerned about the infection in her body and falling platelet levels, but nevertheless amazed at her zeal to live.

"I have never seen a girl like her. Anyone else in her state would have been sedated, but she has this amazing will to survive. She keeps saying, 'I wanna try and sit, make me stand'. We are amazed by her strength," one of the doctors treating her said on Sunday.

Amanat's plight has enraged the country and inspired thousands to come out on the streets to demand justice for her and push for stringent laws for crimes against women, including death penalty for rapists. The epicentre of the agitation has been India Gate in central Delhi, where the protesters have fought pitched battles with the police.
