New Delhi: Akbar Road will not be renamed Maharana Pratap Road, the central government has said, responding to a suggestion by Haryana Chief Minister ML Khattar.

"Suggestions like this should be ignored and cannot be implemented," sources from the Urban Development Ministry have told NDTV.

Akbar Road is one of the most prominent addresses in the heart of the capital, and features the Congress headquarters among others.

Mr Khattar had appealed to Union Minister VK Singh to try and rename the road after Maharana Pratap, who ruled Mewar in the 16th century and is renowned for his brave fight against the Mughals.

Last year, the renaming of the iconic Aurangzeb Road caused a huge buzz on social media and opinion was divided.

Many welcomed the move to rename the road after former president APJ Abdul Kalam instead of a man widely seen as a ruthless ruler. Among them was Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

But some also opposed the move, saying that renaming a road cannot change India's history.

Sources said renaming Akbar Road is not in the same league as Aurangzeb was never a popular figure in history.
