Volunteers expected to act as told, Delhi Police chief BS Bassi has said.
New Delhi:
In a step that is expected to intensify the confrontation with Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Delhi Police chief BS Bassi today requested the government to rein in volunteers and warned against "vigilantism" as the odd-even car use plan comes into effect on New Year.
In a series of tweets, Mr Bassi said:
According to the new car use scheme -- an experimental project which hopes to cut down the number of public vehicles on roads to half - vehicles with odd and even numbers can be on roads on odd and even number dates of calendar. Given the man-power problems of the police, there have been concerns about its implementation.
The Delhi government has clashed with the police chief earlier over what it called the deteriorating law and order situation and demanded that it be allowed to control of the force, instead of the Union home ministry.
Mr Bassi had objected to the idea, saying the current mechanism is appropriate and "any attempt to tinker with it will be an injustice to the residents of Delhi and can be dangerous".
Earlier this month, the Delhi government has decided to move court seeking appropriate action against Mr Bassi after a probe by the state Vigilance Department found him "guilty" of flouting norms in connection with the purchase of a flat. The police chief accused the government of levelling baseless allegations.
In a series of tweets, Mr Bassi said:
DP to enforce odd even REQUESTING GOVT: Volunteers to assist DP & to act as told. ALL NOTE: Rule of Law & Vigilantism are incompatible.

Once volunteers report to DP, they shall be briefed and deployed as per an action plan. No undue harassment of road users is the objective.
