New Delhi: Over a lakh students turned out to vote for the Delhi University Students Union elections at the Delhi University on Friday, as months of an electrifying campaign came to an end.
The polling took place over two phases with the day campus students voting from 8.30am to 12.30 pm, and the evening campus students voted from 3 till 7pm. Those who had entered the polling booth by 7pm were allowed to cast their vote to choose their representative.
A total of 1,35,298 students voted in the election, taking the turnout to 44 per cent which was almost similar to last year.
Over the years, the traditional fight has been between the Congress affiliated National Students Union of India (NSUI), and BJP's Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). But this year saw the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) affiliated Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS) entering the electoral battle.
A Law student, Pratyusha told NDTV, "This election was also one of the safest and there was a huge police presence on campus ahead of campaigning."
Police forces including top officials ensured that peace and calm was maintained during polling.
NSUI candidate, Vivekanand blamed the incumbent ABVP of identity politics, while ABVP rubbished the allegations, saying that they are the only ones fighting for real issues of the students. The CYSS had been under huge criticism for using AAP's political machinery during the campaign.
Apart from CYSS making the election campaign into a three cornered one, there were reports of unprecedented use of money and muscle power.
Counting of votes begins on Saturday morning and the winners are likely to be announced by noon.
