New Delhi:
Passengers travelling on a Delhi Metro train had to be evacuated after it broke down at about 9.45 am, smack in the middle of rush hour, in a tunnel between the Central Secretariat station and Udyog Bhawan in the heart of the capital.
All passengers are safe, officials said, but the service expects trains to run late for the next few hours on this route, which is called the yellow line. The train was headed to Gurgaon from Central secretariat.
The officials said a technical snag stopped the train, which was removed from the tracks at about 11.30 am.
The break-down caused massive delays for the metro service.
Robin Bansal, who works with NDTV and was travelling in a train from Jahangirpuri to Central Secretariat said his train was halted for two hours because of the other train that had broken down. He said for most of that time, officials offered hardly any information through public announcements.
Ankit Jain tweeted, "we are stuck in metro b/w GTB Nagar and DU Metro Stn for the last 40 mins... No response. Pls share official information."
Lakhs of people travel by the Delhi Metro every day. The service has become the preferred mode of travel for those who live in Delhi and work in suburbs like Noida and Gurgaon and vice-versa.
