New Delhi: Geeta knocks on every car window at the red-light signal on the Moolchand road in South Delhi waving the tricolor in her hand and holding a bunch of flags on a stick in the other hand hoping to sell it.
Every Independence Day, we see many such flag bearers on every major intersection of the capital city.
After almost 70 years of independence, children are still peddling the national flag on the streets. Infact, it is not just children, several families from Rajasthan migrate to Delhi for the business of selling flags- a business which lasts just for 5 days every year.
Geeta is not alone, she comes with her entire family of 8 members. All of them are stationed at several red-lights around the Moolchand area.
"Every year we come to Delhi from Rajasthan for five days, from August 10 to August 15. We buy flags in bulk and sell it here. We hope to reach back home with some money till Rakhi," who travelled from Gangapur in Rajasthan, told NDTV.
The sacks they bring along, later acts as pillows for them to spend the night under the same flyovers.
When asked what the tricolor means to them, they reluctantly said, "how do we know, we never went to schools, people say it is for Azaadi, we sell Azaadi."
The girls said THEY have never been to school, but got married instead.
