New Delhi:
Delhi Police personnel on
lathicharged members of a 'tractor march', led by ex-Aam Aadmi Party leader Yogendra Yadav, protesting the Centre's proposed amendments to the Land Acquisition Bill in the heart of Delhi on Sunday night. The protesters claimed that they had intimated police about their march, despite which they had been lathicharged.
The protesters had been part of a 'tractor march', organised by the newly formed Swaraj Abhiyan, against the contentious land acquisition bill, which began in Punjab. Police had prevented the tractors from proceeding into the city at the Kapsahera border, after which the protesters had marched towards Jantar Mantar.
Swaraj Abhiyan, the outfit launched by former Aam Aadmi Party leaders Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, was part of the agitation. The protesters had wanted to hold a demonstration at Jantar Mantar on Monday morning. They had also expressed their intention to install a symbol of protest outside the Prime Minister's residence, which they want to call a farmer's memorial.
Swaraj Abhiyan's spokesperson told NDTV that Delhi Police had denied entry to the tractors, despite having the requisite permissions. "& now starts the Tamasha by government! Police not letting our march move inside Delhi. Even though we have had the permission since July 8," Mr Yadav tweeted.
The protesters also claim that they had sent an intimation to Delhi Police about the march, and that they had been lathicharged on reaching Jantar Mantar. Seven people were injured and taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for medical attention.
