New Delhi: Delhi and its surrounding areas witnessed a thunderstorm and heavy rains this afternoon, which brought some respite from the heat wave that has been sweeping north India and other parts of the country.

The temperature has dropped to 33 degrees Celsius. The average temperature last week has been above 40 degrees Celsius.

The met office has predicted overnight showers in some areas.

"The minimum temperature was recorded at 30 degrees Celsius early this morning, four notches above normal. The humidity was 72 per cent," news agency Press Trust of India quoted a met official as saying.

"Overnight showers are also likely in some areas," he added.

Light showers owing to a Western Disturbance had lashed the capital yesterday but failed to bring any respite as the maximum temperature again crossed the 45 degrees Celsius mark.
