Arvind Kejriwal filed his nomination for the Delhi assembly polls today
New Delhi:
Arvind Kejriwal, the chief of the Aam Aadmi Party, is nearly poorer by Rs 2 lakh since last year's national election but he has gained more FIRs or police complaints in his name.
Mr Kejriwal today declared assets worth a little over two crores while filing his nomination papers to contest next month's Delhi election. The amount is less than the Rs 2.14 crore he had declared seven months ago, when he challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi and lost the election.
True to his "aam aadmi" or common man image, Mr Kejriwal reported that he has no car and his bank account has dropped from four lakh rupees last year to Rs 2.28 lakh now. His assets include a flat near Delhi worth Rs 56 lakh, his wife Sunita's flat in Gurgaon worth Rs 1 crore and inherited property worth Rs 37 lakh. The Kejriwals also have gold worth nine lakh rupees and silver worth Rs 50,000.
Mr Kejriwal has not listed the blue Maruti Wagon R that famously became AAP's war-room on wheels; it is a gift, said sources. The flat just outside Delhi where he currently stays is company accommodation given to his wife Sunita.
The 46-year-old taxman-turned-politician says his monthly income, as a legislator, is Rs 35,000. He has also listed a 41 lakh rupee loan in his wife's name.
The only appreciation has been in the wealth of his wife; her flat originally cost Rs 60 lakh.
What has also increased is the number of FIRs or First Information Reports against him; he faces 10 complaints now, compared to eight during the Lok Sabha polls.
After the "decline" in his wealth, it is almost the same as it was in November, 2013, when he filed his nomination for the previous Delhi assembly election.
