Sajjan Kumar's acquittal: Huge protests at Sonia Gandhi's house
New Delhi: Despite the police barricades that blocked major roads in Central Delhi, the protesters kept arriving.

By 10:30 am, nearly 600 people were shouting slogans against Congress President Sonia Gandhi outside her home. She was away to Karnataka to campaign for the state elections.

Around 50 people were around the corner, at the Congress party office. They burnt effigies of Mrs Gandhi and Congressman Sajjan Kumar.

The demonstrators are furious with the acquittal of Mr Kumar in a case related to the 1984 Sikh riots. They say they will not stop their street protests till the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which prosecuted the case, appeals against the verdict in a higher court. The CBI has not yet decided its course of action.

Yesterday, huge protests were held in West Delhi, forcing the shutdown of two major metro stations. (Read)

On Tuesday, Mr Kumar was acquitted in one of three cases in which he is accused of murder and conspiracy in the 1984 riots. 3,000 Sikhs were killed after Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated by two Sikh bodyguards. (Read)

While finding Mr Kumar not guilty, the judge convicted five others in the same case, sparking anger among Sikh families who asked why the same evidence was not sufficient to nail the politician, who was a Member of Parliament when the riots tore into Delhi.

Among the women in today's demonstration was Jagdish Kaur, whose husband and son as well as three cousins were killed in the riots.

The judge said her statement that she had seen Mr Kumar instigating a mob with a provocative speech was "not acceptable and believable".

The protests ended by 2 pm when the police called in buses to remove the demonstrators. But many said that starting tomorrow, they will hold an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar, the designated spot for demonstrations in the capital.
