The four men who waylaid a van carrying five crores for a bank in Delhi yesterday have been identified, said the city police, and will be arrested soon. But what has emerged is that just four hours after that incident in Defence Colony in south Delhi, another van carrying cash for ATMs of various banks was also looted.
In the first case, four men waiting in a car drove across the path of the van, and forced it to stop. They then shot at one of the guards escorting the five crores, scaring the others away. The attackers then drove away in the bank van.
That was at 1 pm on Friday. At 6:30 pm, near Kirorimal College in north Delhi, driver of a van, a Maruti Eeco, carrying Rs 51 lakh, gave sweets laced with sedatives to the three other men in the vehicle - two custodians of the money and one security guard. The four of them had earlier in the day dropped off Rs 30 lakh to three banks in north Delhi.
As soon as the three men were drowsy, the accused, Om Pal, escaped with the Rs 51 lakh in the van. One of the three men, in a drowsy state, took the wheel and the van reportedly had a minor crash near the Jahangirpuri metro station.
It was only at around 1:30 am on Friday night, when the cops received a call about an abandoned van that had been in an accident. The police found the car near the parking of the Jahangirpuri metro station with the three unconscious men inside. All three were immediately moved to the hospital.
The van belonged to a Mumbai-based agency called Logicash, which transports money from banks to ATMs.
