New Delhi: With less than a month to go for the assembly polls in Delhi, the BJP today announced that former Delhi unit chief Vijender Gupta will take on Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit in her New Delhi constituency.

The face-off is significant since Ms Dikshit had filed a defamation case against Mr Gupta. The Chief Minister has accused him of maligning her to gain political mileage and using "uncivilised" language against her before the civic polls last year. Ms Dikshit had alleged that the BJP leader called her a "villain" and "vamp" and also said that she had cheated the people of Delhi.

Ms Dikshit had moved to the New Delhi constituency in 2008 after her Gole Market seat became defunct due to the delimitation exercise and had defeated BJP's Vijay Jolly by nearly 14,000 votes.

The Chief Minister is hoping for a fourth straight term in these elections, in which she faces a BJP determined to return to power after 15 years. Making it a three-way battle is debutant Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party which was launched just last year.

The BJP's chief ministerial candidate is Harsh Vardhan, a former minister and a medical doctor. The four-time MLA, best known for his role in the very successful pulse polio programme to immunise children against the disease, will contest from the Krishna Nagar constituency.
