New Delhi: Gunshots rang out before dawn near a luxury hotel at the Nehru Place office complex in south Delhi as the police in bulletproof jackets chased a wanted criminal. Akbar, a notorious thief with a Rs 25,000 reward on him, was arrested but members of his gang escaped.
The shootout took place at 2.30 am, when there weren't many people at Nehru Place, a prominent commercial and business center in Delhi that has a number of restaurants, a movie hall and a US Visa office.
Akbar is wanted in cases of attempted murder, robbery, theft and snatching, said senior Delhi Police officer Romil Baaniya.
"After the shootout, Akbar alias Danish was arrested while his accomplice Asif managed to escape with other associates," Mr Baaniya said.
The police reportedly acted on a tip and laid a trap for Akbar, who was allegedly involved in another shootout in south Delhi in December.
Akbar and his aides allegedly fired when they saw the police. 13 rounds of bullets were fired.
Two policemen were shot at but they were not injured because of their bulletproof jackets.
