New Delhi: Facing shortage of water sources to keep its parks green, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation will treat 30 lakh litre of waste water from a 5-Star hotel and supply it to the parks in the area for irrigation purpose.
The project for treating waste water from 5-Star Continental Hotel in Vasant Vihar in South Delhi is ready and will be started soon to supply water for horticultural purposes at the parks in Munirka and other localities in the area, said Radhe Shyam Sharma, Chairman of Standing Committee of SDMC.
"After talks with the hotel management, the project was prepared to treat 1 lakh litre of water every day totalling 3 million litre per month which will be supplied for irrigation of parks," he said.
The municipal corporation has constructed special tanks for treating waste water from the hotel through sedimentation and other treatment processes and laid pipelines for supplying it to the parks.
"An expenditure of Rs 20 lakh was incurred on the project in view of the problems faced in irrigating vegetation in parks due to ban on tube well boring there," Mr Sharma said.
The municipal corporation is exploring possibilities of other such sources of water to meet the requirement of parks, he said.
Last year SDMC had set up a treatment plant on a drain in Vasant Vihar with a cost of Rs 10 lakh, to meet the need of water for irrigation at parks in two blocks of the locality.
Use of treated water for horticulture purposes has been taken up on a massive scale in the municipal areas.
Recently, two treatment facilities have been started on Vasant Kunj drain while another has been started in Kishangarh with the help of local councillor for irrigating parks in the area, said Mukesh Yadav, Director(Press and Information) of SDMC.
