New Delhi: A senior citizen was stabbed 10 times by her domestic help inside her home in south Delhi yesterday afternoon. She then used the knife she was attacked with on the 23-year-old help, Tulsi.

73-year-old Neerja Gupta, who lives with her family in a second floor apartment in the upscale Greater Kailash-1, was in hospital for a night. The help has been arrested.

Tulsi was hired six months ago when the family shifted into the apartment. The police said she had demanded Rs 5 lakh for her mother's treatment and Ms Gupta had refused, which led to a loud argument that was even heard by neighbours.

Hours later, Tulsi allegedly tried to strangle her employer with a dupatta or scarf and then attacked her with a knife.

Leaving Ms Gupta bleeding, Tulsi allegedly took an auto to her village and on the way, called the police and complained that she had been robbed and attacked with a knife.

"She tried to strangle her (Ms Gupta) and then used a knife. Then she made up a story," said Delhi Police spokesperson Deependra Pathak.

The help had reportedly not been verified by the police, as is required for safety.

The crime has been reported a day after Delhi was ranked the most unsafe of 19 major cities in India. The capital recorded the highest crime rate in the country in 2016, according to data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.

Last month, over 80 crimes were reported against the elderly in Delhi.
