Stolen mobiles lead to killers

Stolen mobiles lead to killers
New Delhi: The cellphones they stole after shooting a person dead proved to be their nemesis. Kanhaiya Dey (27), a resident of the Nangloi area and an employee of the Scientific Management Security Services Private Limited, was shot dead by four assailants in the Punjabi Bagh area of West Delhi on July 1, after he agreed to take a ride in their auto-rickshaw.

The accused, identified as Dilip, Sultan Singh, Bhola and Prakash Kumar Chawla, took the eight new cellphones that Dey was carrying and then dumped him in unconscious state near a metro station in Punjabi Bagh, said a senior police official.

A passerby spotted Dey and informed the police. He was then taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospital in Mangolpuri, where he was declared dead on arrival. The deceased had a burn mark and injury on the right side of his chest.

The victim

During investigation, it was revealed that Dey used to deliver uniforms and mobile phones to the newly recruited security guards outside Delhi. On the day of the incident, he was on his way to Muradabad to deliver 10 mobile phones.

The accused were nabbed after they made the mistake of using the robbed cellphones. "We put the phones on surveillance and came to know that a few of them were being used. The accused were then located and arrested," said the police official. He added that one Prakash, who used to buy robbed articles from the accused, was also apprehended.

The trap

"The accused told Dey that they would charge only Rs 100 from Nangloi to Anand Vihar bus terminal. When they reached the underpass of Punjabi Bagh, they asked the victim to hand over all the valuables. When Dey resisted, Bhola fished out a country-made pistol and hit him with the butt. He then shot him dead," said V Ranganathan, DCP, west district.

After sustained interrogation, the accused confessed that it was their usual modus operandi to lure passengers into the auto by citing minimal fare and then loot them at gun point. While Dilip was the auto driver, the other three pretended to be passengers. The police team recovered six mobile phones and a country-made pistol from their possession.
