Student Thrashed in Delhi, Allegedly for Mistaking Someone Else's House as His Own

New Delhi:

A 21-year-old student was allegedly beaten up in south Delhi's Amar Colony by locals in the early hours of March 5 after he, apparently in an inebriated state, tried to break into someone else's house, mistaking it to be his own, a senior police official said.

The student, Arbazuddin, has been admitted to Ganga Ram Hospital in Central Delhi and is in a critical condition.

The incident took place when Arbazuddin tried to open the lock of a house which was not his own. When the key didn't work, he tried to break the door. Hearing the sound, the owner of the house and neighbours woke up. Mistaking him for a thief, they thrashed him, the official said.

"We got a PCR call around 1:30 am from locals that they have caught a thief. A team rushed to the spot and took him to the hospital," he added.

Arbazuddin is from Guwahati and has been living in Delhi since two years. His address was found to be in the same locality. Both the houses were on the first floor and the student probably went into the wrong house apparently in an inebriated condition, police said.

Police have registered a case based on his statement and further investigations are on. The CCTV footage of the area is being checked to verify claims of both the parties.
