Stunt biker killed, another injured in firing by Delhi cops

New Delhi: A 19-year-old motorcyclist who was stunting near the Parliament Street area in central Delhi was killed and another biker was injured after the Delhi Police opened fire to stop them.

The incident happened near the Gol Dak Khana around 2:00 am.

A group of over 100 bikers were performing dangerous stunts near Windsor Lane, not very far from the Parliament.

A PCR van which received a call about the bikers chased them, but the bikers fled from the spot. They were soon spotted by another PCR van, following which they pelted stones at the cops.

The police say they fired two rounds. One in the air and later a second one aimed at the tyre of a biker in an attempt to puncture it. Since the bike had its front tyre in the air, the bullet accidentally hit Karan Pandey, the man who was the pillion rider.

Karan, 19, was rushed to the Ram Manohar Lohiya Hospital, where he was declared dead. The man who Karan was riding pillion with, Punit Sharma, also 19 years old, was injured in the incident. Tests conducted at the hospital show he was riding his bike under the influence of alcohol.

Punit's mother said the police firing was unwarranted. "They are just kids, the police should not have fired."
