New Delhi:
An 18-year-old stabbed his younger sister to death on Tuesday for being in a relationship with a man he disapproved of, police said, denying that it was a case of honour killing.
Laxmi was repeatedly knifed by her brother Sujit in the Mandawali area around 1 am.
She was taken to the Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital but was declared brought dead.
"The siblings studied in Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya in Class 11. The girl had an affair with a boy," said a police officer.
"Last (Monday) night, the boy stabbed his sister several times and fled. We are looking for Sujit," the officer said.
Police said Laxmi had gone to her boyfriend Ankit's house but her family later brought her back.
Ankit, 22, works in a Mother Dairy plant.
"On Monday night, she again went to meet Ankit without informing her family. She was again brought back and a heated argument ensued in the family," said the officer.
"Later, Laxmi's brother picked up a knife from the kitchen and attacked her. He stabbed her many times in the stomach. Hearing her scream, Laxmi's mother rushed to rescue her."
The mother, Sunita, then called the police.
Police said it was not a case of honour killing.
"The girl had never eloped. There was no family restriction and the girl's mother called the police," said the officer.
