New Delhi:

Two persons got a new lease of life after organs harvested from a 77-year-old man, declared brain stem dead, were transported through a green corridor within 21 minutes and transplanted into them.

The organs - two kidneys, two corneas and liver of the donor -  were transported from Janakpuri-based Orchid Hospital in west Delhi to AIIMS.

"After the patient's family members had given consent for donation, the organs were shifted with the help of a green corridor from Orchid Hospital in Janakpuri to AIIMS on February 17. This was done in coordination with Delhi Traffic Police.  Within 21 minutes, we covered the distance of 25km between the two hospitals," said AIIMS Director Dr MC Mishra.

Normally, one has to drive at least for one hour and ten minutes through the traffic chaos on this stretch to reach the AIIMS from Janakpuri.

Both the kidneys were transplanted into a 45-year-old patient at AIIMS and liver was transplanted in a 28-year-old patient at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), hospital authorities said.

Both the corneas of the donor have been preserved at the AIIMS eye centre as there was no needy patient immediately, they said, adding that this is the first time AIIMS used this corridor after the traffic police provided all support.

The 77-year-old man has become the oldest organ donor at the AIIMS now after he donated his liver, both his kidneys and corneas, hospital authorities said.
