New kid on the block Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, the Aam Aadmi Party's students wing, has released its manifesto for the Delhi University Students Union or DUSU elections. It focuses on three things - "degree, income and wi-fi."
These were the three promises that AAP chief and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal had made in his speech at a controversial rock show earlier this week, which rival parties allege violated rules.
Mr Kejriwal promised a loan scheme for higher education, one lakh jobs within the next year and free wi-fi in colleges.
Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti or CYSS president Anupam Kumar said initially wi-fi services will be provided in the special buses which run for the university's students and in public spaces in the north and south campus and colleges.
"Wi-Fi is our focus area and the government has assured us that it will be made available by this year end," Mr Kumar said. The CYSS has also promised to hold job fairs every month if it is voted to power.
In its first election ever, the new organisation takes on the Congress' student wing National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the students wing of the BJP, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which currently controls the DUSU.
These two organisations have dominated DUSU politics for years and are dismissive about the debutant."They (CYSS) have no support base beyond five or six of DU's 55 colleges, so they are worried and are trying to attract students through the CM," said an NSUI leader earlier this week.
The Congress has complained that AAP used the concert organized by the CYSS on Monday to influence students ahead of the elections, which, it alleges violates rules. An election official is investigating the complaint.
In February this year the Aam Aadmi Party crushed the BJP and the Congress in the Delhi Assembly elections.
The DUSU elections will be held on September 11.
