To connect with voters, now Rahul Gandhi offers memories of Indira
Churu, MP: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi addressed a rally in Churu district in Rajasthan today.

Here are the highlights of what he said:

  • BJP is divisive and I keep telling you they make people fight amongst one another
  • Today I'll tell you why I keep saying this
  • When I was young, my father's word was law and he was very strict
  • My grandmother, Indira Gandhi was my saviour
  • For example, I hated eating spinach. She would start reading the newspaper and behind the newspaper I would give the spinach a miss
  • I had two friends - Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. They taught me how to play badminton. They were my friends
  • In 1984, I was in the garden when I met Beant Singh and he asked me 'Where does your grandmother sleep, is her security adequate?'
  • If somebody throws a grenade at you, he told me how to lie down. At that time I did not understand what he meant
  • Years later, I understood that Satwant Singh and Beant Singh were going to throw a grenade at her during Diwali
  • Everyone knows what happened after the assassination
  • I had gone to school that day and I had been sent out of the school. The teacher told me to go home.
  • When I spoke to a lady who worked in our house, she was hysterical. I asked if mother, father were OK, she said yes
  • My security officer told me my grandmother had been shot. My legs were trembling
  • Priyanka and I were taken home and on the road there was grandmother's blood and in a room there was the blood on my friends.
  • Was very angry at my friends (Beant Singh, Satwant Singh) for what they did, took a long time to get over this
  • I went to Punjab and was told by someone - 'I can't believe I am sitting in the same room as you. If it was 20 years ago, I would have killed you.'
  • People are not inherently angry. They are hurt by vested interests and they carry that anger around
  • Political parties hurt people for their own interests and that is why I am against the BJP
  • They go to Muzaffarnagar, Gujarat or Kashmir and spread hatred. We have to go in and battle the fire.
  • I have seen this happen repeatedly
  • They killed my grandmother, my father, maybe they'll kill me. I don't care
  • We try to relieve your pain by giving you employment and food guarantee schemes
  • The Congress has fought for the poor and our politics has been about the rights of the poor
  • We have ensured the rights of landless labourers in the land acquisition bill
  • We know without industry there can be no progress. But we say there should be a partnership between the rich and the poor in India's development
  • Here we are giving free medicine not just for people but also for the animals
  • My speech today is a lengthy one since I told you a story from my heart. Did you like it?
  • I want to tell you about the future.  With the work we are doing, the youth here will benefit in the years to come
  • In most of the things produced in the world, you get to see "Made in China". The developed countries want an alternative to China so that there is less risk.
  • So what are we doing? We're making freight corridors and industrial corridors across India
