New Delhi: In order to control rising price of onions, Delhi government on monday started selling the vegetable at Rs 40 per kg through Fair Price Shops (FPS)and mobile shops in the national capital.
According to government, it has identified 280 FPS outlets in the city and is also selling onions through mobile shops where FPS is not close to residential locations.
"The prices, which had shot up exorbitantly in the recent past, are being monitored by the government constantly and the government will take all steps as and when required to keep a check on the prices," said a senior government official.
The official said that by opening its sales channels directly to the citizens, the city government has achieved the desired purpose of "controlling and stabilising" the onion prices in the retail market and also in mandis of Delhi.
He also said that prices of onion sold through SAFAL outlets have been slashed from Rs 47/- per kg to Rs 40/- per kg and Delhi mandi rates have also come down in view of timely intervention by the government.
Government said that it will continue to strictly monitor the price movement of onion from time to time and necessary interventions on its part will continue till the prices stabilise.
