New Delhi: When the sun rises on a brand new year tomorrow, expect a clear but very chilly day in Delhi. A fresh spell of fog is also on its way and will likely envelop the capital around January 4.

The last day of 2012 has also turned out to be the coldest day of the season so far in Delhi, with the minimum temperature dipping by two degrees to 5.5 deg C.

Large parts of north India are under the grip of an intense cold wave; the death toll in UP alone touched 69 today. Dense fog across Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh has crippled rail and air traffic.

In Delhi, though, December fog conditions have been mostly normal this year, with dense fog being recorded on just three days - between the 23rd and 25th.

Compared with past years, not many flights in and out of the capital have been cancelled or diverted this winter. This is thanks to CAT - III systems being operational throughout, enabling better visibility on Indira Gandhi International Airport's runways.
