Traffic chaos on major Delhi roads
New Delhi: All roads leading into the India Gate hexagon at the heart of Central Delhi have been closed since early this morning, as have nine metro stations in the area, leading to big traffic jams in parts of the city and leaving a large number of commuters stranded and unable to reach work on time.

Today, only various shades of khaki could be seen at India Gate, the site of hostile demonstrations and police action over the weekend. The Delhi Police did not even allow morning walkers into the area.

Traffic snarls were reported on major roads around Pragati Maidan, the Nizamuddin Bridge, Shantipath, Chanakyapuri, Mother Teresa Cresent Road, Mathura Road, Khan Market, Mandi House and Barakhamba Road and other sections that link into the India Gate roads.

There were reports of as much as hour-long delays as traffic crawled in places like the ITO intersection. The ITO bridge was clogged for hours in the morning. It did not help that with the nine Metro stations also closed, many Metro regulars had to use road  transport. They waited, sometimes for hours to get these and there were reports of auto-rickshaws charging exhorbitant sums of money to ferry people across town.

The metro stations that will remain closed until futher notice are Pragati Maidan, Mandi House, Barakhamba Road, Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan, Race
Course Road and Khan Market. Change of metros is being allowed at  Rajiv Chowk and Central
Secretariat stations, but passengers cannot use these stations to begin or end their journeys here. The Rajiv Chowk station sees a footfall of about 5 lakh passengers a day.
