Truck driver ran over Delhi cop trying to stop it for inspection

New Delhi: A Delhi Police constable was killed and a home guard injured after a truck ran over their motorcycle here on Friday, police said.

The accident occurred near Ashoka Garden in west Delhi's Bharat Nagar area around 2.45 am when constable Naresh, 42, and home guard Shankar, 25, tried to stop a truck after its driver hit a police barricade and tried to flee.

The policeman and the home guard were rushed to a nearby hospital. But Naresh was declared brought dead.

"After overtaking the truck when the policemen told the driver to stop, he did not pay heed and ran his vehicle over the bike," said a police official.

Another police team tried to chase the truck but it sped away.

A case has been registered against the unidentified driver.

In a similar incident, suspected criminals ran a truck over a police sub-inspector on Wednesday night, killing him and critically injuring two other police constables in Deoria district, some 290 km from Lucknow. According to police, the incident occurred when 45-year-old Sub-Inspector Uday Bhan Singh, while checking vehicles, got suspicious on a truck and signalled the driver to slow down.
