New Delhi:

Clashes between police and nearly 500 alleged supporters of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party or AAP in North Delh's Burari area on Friday night left 15 people, including nine policemen, injured.

Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident; the police report also names AAP's lawmaker from Burari Sanjeev Jha and Akhilesh Tripathi from nearby Model Town.

The incident occurred late on Friday night, after the two AAP leaders, along with their supporters, went to the local police station to reportedly demand action against the accused in the alleged kidnapping of two children from the area.

The two children, who had reportedly gone missing earlier that day, had later been found. Locals have claimed the children were kidnapped and that they managed to nab one of the alleged kidnappers.

The lawmakers said they decided to intervene after locals complained that the police didn't take action fast enough and also tried to shield the alleged accused.  Both the accused are currently in custody.

Mr Jha, AAP lawmaker from Burari, said, "Two children were kidnapped and the people came (to the police station) to complain. But the police did not listen and instead beat them (complainants) up. I was called (by the locals) to look into the case".

The police have a completely different version of the event. They claim that they acted swiftly and were quick to apprehend the alleged kidnappers. But, claim the police, Mr Jha instigated the crowd when he was stopped from entering the police station on Friday night.

"The AAP MLA's vehicle did not have any sticker (identifying it as that of a lawmaker) on it so it was stopped. There were some anti-social elements who started throwing stones over the issue. We have registered an FIR (First Information Report) in which the two MLAs have been named, along with others," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, North, Madhur Verma.

The FIR against the lawmakers and other protesters have been registered under sections of rioting, unlawful assembly, obstructing public servant from carrying out his duty, assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, voluntarily causing hurt, criminal intimidation and mischief at Burari police station.
