The response came during hearing of a plea seeking removal of party symbols of candidates from EVMs
New Delhi:
The State Election Commission today told the Delhi High Court that it on September 5 notified its decision to print the candidates' photograph along with the existing particulars such as serial number, names and party symbol on electronic voting machines for the upcoming municipal polls.
A division bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and Justice Sangita Dhingra Sehgal was informed by the SEC that every ballot p aper for use in the election to the three Municipal Corporations of Delhi will contain photograph of the contesting candidates.
It said that when more than one contesting candidates have similar names, due to alphabetical arrangement of names on the ballot paper, names and symbols of such candidates are printed one after the other, it creates confusion in the mind of the voter.
The SEC response came during the hearing of a petition seeking, amongst others, removal of party symbols of candidates from EVMs in municipal corporation polls in the capital and inclusion of photographs of contesting candidates on the EVM.
