Overcast skies, nippy winds and maximum temperature settling four notches below average at 18.6 degrees -- it was a wet, pleasant day in the capital on Tuesday as the city received the heaviest rainfall of the winter season, breaking a six-year-old record.
The city received 46 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am on Monday to 8:30 am on Tuesday - the highest winter rainfall in a day in the past six years, said an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
"The rainfall received was the highest in the winter season since 2007, which had received 40.4 mm," said an official at the Safdarjung centre of the IMD.
In addition, the capital received 11.2 mm of rainfall from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm on Tuesday and the minimum temperature settled five notches above average at 13.5 degrees Celsius.
The Met office has forecast more rains on Wednesday and chilly days in store.
"The showers are due to western disturbance and more are expected tomorrow (Wednesday). Rain will be accompanied by hailstorms," the IMD official said, adding that Delhi residents can expect colder days ahead.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 19 and 11 degrees Celsius respectively.
Meanwhile, the overnight rains led to flooding of roads resulting in traffic jams in several areas Tuesday morning.
Commuters in the capital and its suburbs had a harrowing time with several key roads waterlogged following heavy rains and traffic snarls reported from across the city.
However, the situation eased a bit by evening and no major jams were reported in the city, as per the Delhi Traffic Police.
Fog continued to affect train services as a total of seven trains were delayed and another 12 cancelled on Tuesday, an official of the Indian Railways said.
Monday's maximum and minimum temperatures were three notches below average at 24.2 and 11.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
