What killed Ram Bhor: No hospital beds, broken machines

New Delhi: Ram Bhor, a 40-year-old rickshaw puller in the capital, died on Monday. But his final hours paint a terrifying portrait of our public healthcare.

Ram Bhor was riding back home alone when an unknown vehicle knocked him down outside Jehangir Metro Station at 1:30 am. A passerby informed the police control about the accident at about the same time.

An ambulance was rushed to the spot and Ram Bhor was taken to Babu Jagjivan Hospital. He was given the first aid here and then he was referred to the ISBT Trauma Centre.

After 20 minutes his brother, who had arrived by then, was informed that his test could not be done as the ultrasound machine was not working.

After an hour's delay Ram Bhor was referred to Lok Nayak Jayprakash (LNJP) Hospital for an ultrasound. When they reached the hospital the staff said there were no beds to accommodate Ram Bhor and asked his brother to take him urgently to another facility for blood transfusion.

By then it was already 5:15 am and Ram Bhor died as he was taken out of this hospital.

"Lok Nayak Jayprakash Hospital has set up a committee to look into the incident," Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said.

Ram Bhor has left behind a wife and six children in Uttar Pradesh's Sultanpur district as he was the only earning member in the family.
