A joyous Surajmukhi sits with her baby and her husband, Pradip
New Delhi:
Three constables of the Delhi Police turned saviours, if not really mid-wives, as they helped a woman deliver her baby in their PCR van last week.
It was an unexpected delivery for 22-year-old Surajmukhi who suddenly went into labour pain on Thursday night as her husband and in-laws drove her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Matters were made worse when their car broke down on the way.
Surajmukhi's father-in-law Pramod Sharma said the three constables rushed to their rescue as they cried for help. "I told them she is expecting a baby and asked them for help. They helped us a lot," he said.
Head constable Laxman Singh, constable Harish and constable Amandeep - on duty that night in Kirari and Mubarakpur road in Delhi - said they were just doing their job.
"We told them that we will take you to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital and on the way only the lady delivered the baby," Mr Singh said. "We are always prepared for difficult circumstances and it was our duty to offer help," his colleague Harish said.
Constable Amandeep said with a wide smile on his face, "We are feeling proud for keeping up the name of Delhi Police."
The trio was recently awarded the 'Asadharan Karya Puraskar' by Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi and each one of them was also given a cash reward of Rs 10,000. They said they were always ready to render help and come to the aid of citizens.
