Woman commits suicide, family alleges harassment for dowry

New Delhi: A 26-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in central Delhi with her family on Wednesday alleging that harassment for dowry drove her to take the extreme step.

Harpreet Kaur was found hanging by her husband Gurdev Singh (28) at their residence in Karol Bagh area and was rushed to Metro Hospital in Ranjit Nagar at around 3 pm where the doctors declared her brought dead.

The husband, who works in an MNC in Gurgaon, told police that she was depressed for sometime due to health reasons but the father of the deceased alleged she died due to harassment by her husband for dowry.

Gurdev and Harpreet got married four years ago. The body has been sent for post-mortem and a case has been registered.

An inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate has been initiated.

Manjeet Singh, the father of the deceased, filed a complaint with police alleging that Gurudev had been harassing Harpreet for the last six months, demanding Rs two lakh and a car.

Gurdev could not be contacted for his comments.
