Delhi:
A young unemployed graduate was arrested in central Delhi minutes after he allegedly stole the crown of an idol from a temple, police said today.
The man has been identified as Arif, a resident of West Patel Nagar, and the incident was reported from Santoshi Mata Mandir at Tank Road in Karol Bagh yesterday.
"Gopal Mishra, the priest, was cleaning the temple when he saw a youth entering to offer prayer who immediately left. He also noticed that the crown of the deity was missing. He raised an alarm and informed police," a senior police official said.
Arif was caught red-handed by public and police, the official said.
The youth told police that he was involved in theft of crown and other ornaments, including a canopy from a temple in Ranjit Nagar early this year, the official said.
He was also arrested in a case of vehicle accessory theft in Ranjit Nagar.
Arif is a graduate who is currently unemployed.
"The earning of the family is meagre and hence he took to committing crime. He stole ornaments when there was no rush in the temple," the official said.
