New Delhi: Anita Karwal, IAS took over as the new Chairperson of Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on August 31, 2017. Prior to joining CBSE, Ms Karwal was posted as Additional Secretary in Human Resources Development (HRD) ministry. She has also served as the Gujarat Chief Electoral officer during the Lok Sabha election in 2014 in addition to various other assignments and brings with her rich and varied experience.

Ms Karwal replaced R K Chaturvedi, a Madhya Pradesh cadre IAS officer who was transferred to the National Skill Development Agency, reported the Indian Express. 

Mr Chaturvedi was appointed as Chairman of CBSE in July last year. 

In last one year, CBSE was drawn into several controversies including the court cases of moderation policy and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).

The CBSE chairman is the Chief Executive of the Board and is assisted by eight Heads of Departments: the Secretary, Professor & Director (Academics, Research, Training and Innovation), Controller of Examinations, Director (Edusat. & Vocational Education), Director (CTET & JNVST), Director (IT), Regional Directors and Executive Director (JAB). 

The Secretary (School Education and Literacy), Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India is the Controlling Authority of the Board and appoints the Chairman and other Heads of Departments.
