New Delhi: State government of Assam has proposed The Cotton University Bill 2017, to set up Cotton University. The proposal if approved will lead to the merging of Cotton College and Cotton College State University. The government is looking forward to the merging of the century old Cotton College (set up in 1901) and Cotton College State University (set up in 2011) despite the protest where students of the college are opposing the merging.

Over the last six years there have been issues in the academic and administrative functioning of the Cotton College State University.

The proposed varsity will have the autonomy in preparation of syllabus, exam conducting, assessment and result declaration. However it can't grant affiliation to other colleges and institutions. It will have faculties in Arts, Science, Medicine, Agriculture, Commerce, Management and other streams.

However the other side of the story is more connected to the teaching and learning aspect of the college. It says it will give more importance to research and less to teaching.

Every year higher secondary admission in Cotton College witnesses huge response. Large number of students from Assam and other parts of North East take admission in higher secondary courses in Cotton College. More than 3000 students are pursuing undergraduate courses as well. Opposing the move of the government, Cotton College students have alleged that the merger will destry the century old heritage of the college.
