CAT 2017: Seat Reservation Policy At IIMs
New Delhi:
The online application for CAT 2017 exam will begin in August and as per speculations the official notification will be out by the end of this month. CAT is a nationally conducted management exam in which an estimated 2 lakh students would participate this year. CAT will be primarily held for admission to Post Graduate Program in Management which is offered at the 20 IIMs spread around the country. IIMs follow the central government policy on seat reservation. Students belonging to reserved categories and planning to appear in CAT this year should know the reservation policies of IIMs for a clear understanding.
Before we explain the reservation policy, let's make it clear that the rules for seat reservation apply to the institution and not to the examination.
Candidates eligible for reservation should note that apart from fulfilling the reservation criteria they also need to fulfill the minimum eligibility criteria and certain minimum level of performance in the CAT exam and subsequent rounds of selection for admission to IIMs.
The reservation policy followed by IIMs is given below:
1. 15% seats at the IIMs are reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), 7.5% seats are reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST), and 27% seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes belonging to 'non-creamy' layer (NC-OBC).
2. Only those categories mentioned in the Central Government List on the last day of CAT registration will be considered for reservation.
3. 3% seats are reserved for Persons with Disability (PwD).
4. The three categories of disability which are considered for reservation are - low vision blindness, hearing impairment, and loco-motor disability or cerebral palsy. Candidates suffering from not less than 40% of these disabilities will be considered for reservation.
Candidates seeking reservation will have to upload their category certificate or disability certificate at the time of registration for CAT 2017.
