9 Things Freshers Should Do In College Life
New Delhi:
College days are considered to be the best days of one's lives and it is indeed. It is the time when you make life-long friends and memories. It is also the time when you gradually discover a purpose or realize your passion. It is the time when you slowly begin to understand what becoming an adult means. College life is full of nooks and corners which teach you something new every minute. However, sometimes students lose focus and end up wasting their time in college.
Would it not be a good thing to have a cheat sheet for college life? Would not be a boon if you knew what to do to make college life fun and fruitful at the same time?
Well, there is of course not a set formula but there are a few things you can do which would ensure that by the end of your degree you end up with some lessons for life and skills for your resume.
1. Learn a language: Learning a language will open up additional job and academic opportunities for you. Additionally it will also acquaint you with a culture vastly different from yours and open up your mind to ideas and thoughts other than those around you.
2. Maintain 75% attendance: Most colleges expect students to maintain a 75% attendance. It may sound boring but never underestimate the power of a University or college administration. Be smart and count the working days in a year and number of classes you have and make sure to attend at least 75% classes. Not only will you learn things, you will also be able to stay in the good books of teachers.
3. Explore museums and local tourist spots: Learn about the city you live in. A city holds numerous mysteries in its folds, explore them. Shopping malls will never give you the same satisfaction as learning a new, unknown fact about the place you live in.
4. Make friends from diverse backgrounds: Don't limit yourself to making friends from just your department. Meet and make friends from other departments and learn things which you will never get to learn by hanging out with people from similar backgrounds. Everyone has to offer something new and everyone can teach something about life and how to live it.
5. Visit college library: Many students skip going to the library because of their lack of interest in books or go only during the exams. Libraries are not a place to skip. Scroll through the library catalogue and see what books, magazines or journals are available. Your librarian wouldn't mind if you read a magazine on pop music! Libraries are not meant to read only academic or course books. You can amass great knowledge about diverse subjects at a library.
6. Befriend the college copier: Every college campus has a Xerox shop. Befriend the person who runs the shop. Not only will you get to know what happens around the campus, you will also get your hands on the latest reading list and notes before everyone else.
7. Join a club: Join a club which aligns with your talents or skills or interests. You will make friends. You will come to know people you can bank upon. And you will add some extra skills and experience to your resume.
8. Volunteer: Even if for one hour, devote your time to doing something good and fruitful for the community. You will learn a lot about team management, overcoming hurdles while doing something for the society.
9. Intern: During your college break, try and find some internship opportunity in a field of your interest and work diligently and learn practical skills. Who knows you might just land a job before you even leave college.
