Much to the relief of aspirants, the University has increased the seats close to four times the number in previous admission session. In March 2017, JNU administration faced the wrath of candidates over 'drastically reduced MPhil, PhD seats.' Discontent fumed up after 'no MPhil, PhD seats for many courses' was noticed in the prospectus. In comparison to 1174 seats available in its previous session, only 194 research seats were open for admission, then. While only 2 departments of School of Social Sciences had the seats, there were zero seats in history and political science departments. There were even no seats for integrated MPhil-PhD course for much sought after subjects like physical sciences, computational and integrative science, biotechnology and Sanskrit.

The decision to cut down the seat numbers due to changed UGC norms on PhD students and guides, had received objections from JNUSU and JNUTA and a mass protest demonstration continued for days outside UGC office.
