JNU Entrance Srinagar Centre Cancellation Condemnable, Says SFI
New Delhi:
Students Federation of India (SFI) condemned the JNU Administration's move to cancel the Srinagar centre for the upcoming entrance examination being conducted for admission to various courses in the varsity. In a very inconsiderate and exclusionary manner, a statement from SFI said, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has cancelled the entrance examination centre of Srinagar and shifted all candidates to the centre in Jammu.
According to the student body, the only excuse that the JNU authorities have for this move is that the concerned 'Kendriya Vidyalayas' in Srinagar (including the one in Badamibag cantonment and another centre near Humhama, which is closest to the Srinagar airport) have denied holding the exam, due to the winter season.
The fact is that, according to SFI, all examinations in Kashmir, ranging from 10th class to masters are held in winters too.
"Even the coming State Civil Service Examination (Mains) is being held in the peak of Winters in Kashmir. So the excuse that the JNU entrance cannot be conducted in Kashmir in the winters does not carry any weight on the issue of Centre," said the statement.
"Members from the students' body including the JNUSU-SSS Convener, Aejaz Ahmad Rather, had given three alternative suggestions, in written, to the JNU administration, which were ready to hold the exams within the vicinity of Srinagar.
"But the administration did not pay any heed to these suggestions and consistent requests from the students and very callously and unilaterally cancelled its Srinagar centre. This shows the arrogance and high-handedness of JNU administration," said the statement.
"We left all alternatives in front of the JNU administration to conduct its entrance examination in Srinagar from alternative centers to staff for conducting its entrance examination in srinagar. But the administration unilaterally cancelled its srinagar centre without any hue to our valid and justified concerns," said Aejaz Ahmad Rather, JNUSU-SSS Convener who has been following the issue.
Mr Rather complained that most of the students from Kashmir valley who had applied for the JNU Entrance will not be able to appear in entrance tests, because, during winters its very dangerous and risky to travel by road and the airfare is very which a student cannot manage.
"Also it will take there four days and the students will need lodging and boarding charges to stay in Jammu. Besides this most of the students are also busy in there concern annual exams in and cannot give four days to appear in one exam," added Mr Rather.
Unlike in previous years, the JNU Entrance Examinations, 2018-19 will be conducted during 27-30 December 2017. JNU has 10 schools that contain 41 diverse centres of studies and 5 special centres of studies.
The JNU Entrance Examination was advertised on September 9, 2017; prospectus was uploaded on the JNU web site on September 15, 2017 and the final date of application was October 17, 2017.
Significantly, more than 105, 000 candidates will sit for the examination in 131 fields of study.
